Gallery: portrait commissions

Commission Finlay to do an original digital painting of you or your loved ones. Finlay will visit and do a short photo and sketching session so there is no need for long sittings. If a visit is not possible Finlay will work from photo or video.

A custom designed portrait is something special; it becomes a family heirloom that will be passed down through the generations. The process of painting a portrait, refining and defining every detail and nuance of a persons features lends a depth and scope to an image that makes it a unique record of a personality at a specific point in their life.

Finlay will be also be happy to turn you into any fantasy character that you wish... you can let your imagination run wild with a painting. Anything is possible.

Commissioning your portrait: the process

Email Finlay for an in-depth discussion about your requirements with no commitment required at the outset. Thoughts about colourscheme are useful if the portrait needs to fit in with interior decoration so a photo of the room would be very helpful if this is important. You can also discuss what you'd like the overall feeling to be; true to life, mysterious, mono-chromatic etc.

Next, choose your image size: prints are available in any size or proportion to a maximum of 1.5 metres wide to a staggering 20 metres long.

Finally, you can choose to have the print framed yourself or Finlay will arrange to have the print framed by the world famous Royal Academy Framers in London's Piccadilly.

Once you have agreed with Finlay the exact specifications of the painting, and the prints you'd like, he'll send you a full quote including postage and packaging.

Finlay will also work with his partner, interior designer Janette Swift to design and paint a mural of any size in your home or business, interior or exterior.

Prices start from $3,000 (approx. £1,500.00). Payments can be made by PayPal or cheque. English prices are subject to the US/Pound exchange rate.

Can I have the digital file too?
No, but you can have further prints made at cost with a small administration fee.

The painting shown here is also for sale in your gallery - would you be selling mine too?
No, Finlay will not be exploiting your portrait in any way. You are welcome to commercially exploit your portrait but Finlay retains copyright on all his work and will be very happy to discuss a mutually beneficial arrangement with you.

Do you do group portraits?
Yes, you can have your family, friends and business colleagues portrayed. You can also have your pets, house or car... anything you want.

Can you make me into a fantasy character?
Of course... Finlay can place you in any fantasy setting or situation you wish, give you angel wings or a devils tail. He will guarantee discretion so you can let your imagination run wild, the wilder the better.

How long does it take?
The process can be very quick depending on Finlay's schedule. You can expect to receive your finished portrait between two and six months from commissioning.

Why would it take up to six months?
If Finlay is not happy with your portrait he will start again and revise the painting as many times as he feels he needs to, even if that means starting again from the beginning.

How do I know I'll like it?
Buying a bespoke portrait is not like buying a car... it is not a manufacturing process with a definite outcome. It is very much about the relationship between the artist and client. It is Finlay's job as an artist to understand your needs and make experienced decisions about how to portray that. The initial discussions about the portrait will be in-depth enough to give Finlay a precise understanding of who you are and what you want. As a client, you are commissioning the portrait based on an appreciation of Finlay's practical experience and technique as well as a finely honed instinct based on a lifetime working as an artist.
